Kentucky Long Rifles, Inc.
In 1966 it was agreed to start a new muzzleloading club in Morehead, KY. The name
selected and voted on was the “The Kentucky Long Rifles, Inc.” The first “range” was located
on Bob Perkins property in Hidden Valley. A small shed was acquired to
store targets and target boards. Members constructed backstops and utilized empty cable spools for loading benches.
A year later a piece of property was purchased off route 519 south of Morehead from Opal Brown consisting of approximately
33 acres. Shortly thereafter a work party was organized and equipment obtained to begin construction of the current range.

During the first winter the club decided to construct a club house and purchased two small log cabins. The following
spring the two cabins were placed together to re-build a larger cabin. During this period
emphasis was to promote deer hunting in the Pioneer Weapons Area and the increase of hunters was very rewarding to the founders
of the new club. Additional promotion of muzzle loading continued and the club was successful in acquiring additional hunting
days in the PWA gaining more recognition for the sport. Additionally the club has received state and national recognition
for conservation and preservation efforts. They have been named the Kentucky League of Sportsmen Outstanding Club, the National
Wildlife Federation Club of the Year and other similar awards.
The club has been in continued activity since 1966. Many
of the original members have passed on to a better hunting place but are missed by all of the brotherhood of black powder.
